The
Australian Terrier is a small but sturdy dog which is a diminutive
working terrier who stands 10 to 11 inches tall at the
withers. The coat is distinctive for its rough ruff and apron,
soft topknot, and overall harsh texture which is about 2 1/2 inches
except for the tail. The body is considerably longer than it
is tall. A dog in good working condition exhibits fine balance
and weight; the dog is medium in bone. The ears are pricked
with no tendency to flare off the skull and the tail is docked.
In color the Australian Terrier is blue and tan, solid sandy or red,
smutty marks in colored portions are a fault, as is an all black
body coat and white marks on feet and or chest. The head must
be long and strong with a smart expression. Notice an inverted
V-shaped area with less hair extending from nose to muzzle.
The neck is long and slightly arched. The ribs are well sprung
but never round in appearance; loin is fairly short with slight tuck
up; never cobby. Fore legs are straight; hind strong and well
angulated at stifles and hocks.
The Australian Terrier
dog always has something to do; this is a very busy little dog who
can be constructive and obedient. Instruction is necessary or
else the Australian Terrier will devise his own itinerary.
Quick problem solvers and natural workmen, they provide owners with
hours of assistance and amusement. Good watch dogs, they are
not yappy but spirited; easygoing but purposeful; plucky but
obedient.
