The German Shepherd Dog
is an agile, balanced dog who is longer than tall, with a notably
deep body and smooth curves. The impression of the animal must
be one of strength, muscular fitness and substance, never spindly or
clumsy. Height for males should be about 24 to 26 inches; 2
inches less for females. The head befits the breed's nobility
and quality, it is cleanly chiseled and without coarseness or finesses.
Ears are moderately pointed and in proportion to the skull, always
carried erect. The neck is relatively long, strong and clean
cut, without loose skin. The withers are higher than the back
and slope into the relatively short back, which must be straight
without sag or roach. Chest is deep and carried well down
between the legs; ribs well sprung and long, not barrel shaped or
too flat. Tail is bushy with a slight saber like curve,
extending to hocks.
A dog among dogs, the
German Shepherd is a popular choice for a companion and protection
dog
for many
good reasons. He is handsome, intelligent, obedient,
affectionate and even-tempered. Well bred Shepherds, given
proper socialization and competent training, arguably offer an owner
the best of all possible worlds. He is never aggressive nor
spooked at a person's approach. Ideally a friendly, adaptable
and fun loving family dog who provides ample protection for family
and property. For more information on this breed of dog, visit
